Microsoft hires former Forrester Analyst as Cloud Chief Strategist

Today, March 17, Microsoft disclosed that the former Vice President & Principal Analyst at Forrester Research: James Staten, was elected as chief strategist for its Cloud & Enterprise group. Staten will report to Corporate VP ans Cloud Chief Scott Guthrie.

As stated in his LinkedIn profile, James Staten is a veteran in the market, with over 30 years experience in marketing, business development and corporate strategy with large tech companies and start ups. At Forrester his main focus was to track, trend and forecast the technology evolutions and usage trends of data center and server technologies. His main areas of concentration were Cloud Computing & Adaptive Intelligence (collaborative business intelligence).

Docker releases beta of new Orchestration tools

Docker last week announced the availability of its orchestration tools in beta. The orchestration tools are able to assist in portability of the Docker containers and consists of Docker Machine, Docker Swarm and Compose 1.1.

Docker Machine provisions the host infrastructure and installs the Docker Engine. It supports the following twelve drivers in this release: Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2), Digital Ocean, Google Cloud Platform, IBM Softlayer, Microsoft Azure, Microsoft Hyper-V, OpenStack, Rackspace Cloud, VirtualBox, VMware Fusion, VMware vCloud Air, and VMware vSphere.

Release: Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform 6

Red Hat today announced the release of version 6 of its OpenStack platform management tool Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack. Version 6 is the follow up of version 5 which was released in July last year. The Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform is able to create, deploy, and scale a public or private OpenStack cloud. The OpenStack Platform is build on top of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) and uses the OpenStack Juno release of the OpenStack cloud platform as its basis.

Release: Docker Engine 1.5

Docker has released version 1.5 of its container virtualization solution. Docker provides so called container virtualization, allowing an application and its dependencies to run as an isolated process inside a virtual environment. This environment is then portable from local computers to backend infrastructure and cloud. Docker uses LinuX Containers (LXC) running in the host OS allowing you to share the resouces available to the host.
