IBM acquires SoftLayer and CSL International

In the competition to win the Cloud Computing market, IBM is struggling not to be left behind its competitors, latest news are the acquisitions of two cloud computing companies, respectively SoftLayer acquired on July 8th and CSL International acquired on July 9th.

SoftLayer, headquarterd in Dallas, Texas delivers a unified platform with an high-performance architecture and global private network, serving approximately 21,000 customers across 140 countries, a cloud computing infrastructure—including dedicated servers, managed hosting and infrastructure as a service (IaaS). IBM states that the acquired technology of SoftLayer will extend its IBM SmartCloud Services portfolio, offering customers worldwide a comprehensive cloud portfolio which would be OpenStack compliant while maintaining existing interfaces.

Israeli company, CSL International, offers a product called CSL-WAVE which allows to monitor and manage z/VM and Linux on System z environments with drag and drop to create and connect virtual servers to resources. This acquisition will benefit IBM System z portfolio, as it would allow to deepen the consolidation and cloud capabilities, offering a simplified management of the virtualization environment.

SoftLayer and CSL International are only two of the many cloud acquisitions IBM has made lately to intensify its cloud offering. IBM is still committed to change skin to follow the market and fighting hard not to lose its leadership among the cloud providers.
