Amazon announces support for Windows Server 2008 R2 on EC2

Amazon has announced that it now supports running Windows Server 2008 R2 and SQL Server 2008 R2 on their Amazon Machine Images (AMI). Amazon is also planning to add support for running Windows Server 2008 R2 in the Amazon Virtual Privat Cloud (VPC). AWS VM Import is also updated so that importing Windows Server 2008 R2 is supported.

Instances with Windows Server 2008 R2 are offered in four different flavors:

Core – contains a scaled-down version of Windows Server, with the minimum set of server roles.

Base – contains a basic installation of Windows Server 2008 R2.

Base with IIS and SQL Server Express – Serves as a starting point for Windows developers.

SQL Server Standard 2008 R2 – Serves as a starting point for Windows developers.
