Red Hat announces the Cloud Suite for Applications

Red Hat yesterday announced a new Suite which bundles its cloud portfolio to manage both Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) and Platform as a Service (PaaS) workloads. The suite, which is called the Cloud Suite for Applications contains Red Hat Enterprise Linux Openstack Platform (RHELOSP) as the IaaS engine, OpenShift by Red Hat as the PaaS engine and Red Hat CloudForms to provide an unified management layer. The Cloud Suite for Applications will first be made available in an early access program. General availability for Red Hat Cloud Suite for Applications will be announced at a later date.

The Cloud Suite will complement, as a commercial bundle, Red Hat Cloud Infrastructure (RHCI) which includes Red Hat CloudForms, Red Hat Satellite, Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform, Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization, and an optional Red Hat Enterprise Linux unlimited guests, where the Cloud Suite will basically add OpenShift as a different entry point to implement cloud-native capabilities on premises. CloudForms will be more integrated with OpenShift in order to manage the Container based workloads.

OpenShift by Red Hat provides the PaaS component of the solution. OpenShift provides a wide range of languages and services, deployed in applications through a cartridge. Cartridges can be web frameworks, databases, monitoring services, or connectors to external backends.

End-user applications reside in so called OpenShift Nodes. These nodes are managed by Brokers providing orchestration and automation. Gears provides secure containers where the applications inside a node can run. OpenShift uses the SELINUX subsystem to provide a pre-configured and hardened security layer around gears. Compute resources (CPU, RAM and Disk) are allocated using the Control Groups (CGroups) linux subsystem.

CloudForms is the management component of the solution and allows the management of hypervisors from Red Hat, VMware and Microsoft as well as RHELOSP and Amazon EC2. CloudForms provides the following functionality:

  • Monitoring and tracking
  • Capacity management and planning
  • Resource usage and optimization
  • Workload life-cycle management
  • Policies to govern access and usage
  • Self-service portal and catalog
  • Controls to manage requests
  • Quota enforcement and usage
  • Chargeback and cost allocation
  • Automated provisioning
  • Dashboards
  • Reports
  • Policies
  • Alerts
  • Approval workflows
