Pivotal introduces Pivotal CF Mobile Services

The Pivotal Initiative is the organization, born in December 2012 from the merge of EMC and VMware cloud application and big data offerings and well known for Pivotal CF, its commercially supported hybrid Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) based on Cloud Foundry.

Yesterday Pivotal announced a set of new capabilities specifically aimed to facilitate the developers community to build and deploy next-generation mobile applications.

These new features, delivered in a package called Pivotal CF Mobile Services and partially derived from Xtreme Labs acquisition, include:

  • Push Notifications Direct integration with enterprise services behind the firewall, built to scale with full control of data and comprehensive logging and tracking
  • API Gateway Transform legacy backend APIs into mobile device-optimized APIs, significantly improving app performance and user experience
  • Data Sync Mobile-optimized API to access multiple types of data storage makes it easy for developers to incorporate enterprise data into their apps

This is a predictable move for all PaaS players (we are indeed waiting for Red Hat’s move), where the world of enterprise development consistently follows the rule of mobile first and that mobile devs increasingly require more dedicated platforms.

Pivotal CF Mobile Services are expected to be generally available in 2014.
