Release: Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization 3.3 and Red Hat Cloud Infrastructure 4.0

Red Hat has released version 3.3. of its virtualization platform based on the Kernel-based Virtual Machine KVM hypervisor: Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization (RHEV). The latest version we covered at was version 3.1 which was released in december 2012, version 3.2 was released in October 2013. Version 3.3. introduces support for OpenStack features in Technology Preview allowing customers to use OpenStack Compute, Storage and Networking features.

Version 3.3. provides the following features and enhancements as detailed in the release notes:

  • Administration Portal Features
    • Bonds and interfaces can be joined by dragging one onto another
    • Create Snapshot button added
    • Red Hat Support plug-in in order to create and manage Red Hat support cases and access documentation
  • Infrastructure Features
    • Technology Preview of OpenStack Foreman
    • Cloud-init integration
    • Storage Pool Manager role can be manually assigned or re-assigned to hosts
    • Support for Trusted Compute Pools based on OpenAttestation project
    • Memory balloon optimization, and error messages
    • Virtual watchdog device
    • CPU sharing priority
  • Developer Features
    • Backup and Restore API integration
    • Virtual Machine scheduler and scheduling API
  • Networking Features
    • Management network setup procedure improvments
    • Migration network role
    • vNIC custom properties
    • Network QoS using vNIC profiles
    • Multiple network gateways per host
    • New python-inotify package
    • Refresh host network configuration
    • Improved bond support
    • Technology of OpenStack Neutron Support as a network provider
  • Quota Features
    • Quota Mangement Support
  • Storage Features
    • Virtio-SCSI Support
    • GlusterFS Support
  • User Portal Features
    • Multi monitor support on single QXL device
  • SPICE Features
    • Technology of SPICE-HTML5 support

Together with the release of Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization (RHEV) version 3.3 Red Hat also released version 4.0 of its on-premises Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) solution based on OpenStack: Red Hat Cloud Infrastructure.

Red Hat Cloud infrastructure consists of Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization, Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform, providing the OpenStack foundation and Red Hat CloudForms providing management and orchestration.
