Release: Red Hat CloudForms 3.0

Posted by Paola Cornacchiola   |   Wednesday, November 6th, 2013   |

On the first day of the OpenStack Summit, Red Hat Inc. the company responsible for the creation and maintenance of the homonymous GNU/Linux distribution announced the release of its cloud management platform named Red Hat CloudForms 3.0. The product is based on Red Hat’s acquisition of ManageIQ in 2012, and it is supposed to add enterprise-grade cloud management capabilities for Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform and improved management capabilities for Amazon Web Services (AWS).
CloudForms offers management capabilities for different infrastructure platforms, from VMware vSphere to Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization, and Amazon AWS.

This new release is going to enlarge support to the Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform, it would be possible for cloud administrators to manage OpenStack and integrate it into existing environments merging the management. Red Hat solution also allows support for AWS, giving the chance to its users to manage workloads running in public clouds together with workloads in their private clouds.

Among the features of CloudForms 3.0:

  • Seamless Self-service Portals that provide users with role-delegated, automated self-provisioning of catalog-driven IT services, with requisite request approvals and integration with enterprise service catalogs. Cloud Lifecycle Service Management spans from provisioning to retirement, with automatic aging, tracking and monitoring of services.
  • Advanced Chargeback, Quotas and Metering, with detailed usage tracking by configurable classifications and support for multiple rates tables (fixed cost, allocation and usage) and reservation based chargeback.
  • Continuous Discovery and Insight from automatic, agent-free discovery of OpenStack instances and  relationships and capacity and utilization, along with configuration tracking and drift comparison.
  • Unified Operations Management, offering multi-site federation that provides “single pane of glass” visibility across cloud and virtual infrastructures, including runtime operations, service configuration, utilization, events, timelines, reports and customizable dashboard mash-ups.

Bryan Che, General Manager Cloud at Red Hat declares:

With CloudForms 3.0, Red Hat continues to expand our open hybrid cloud solutions to include critical cloud management capabilities. Red Hat offers a comprehensive cloud portfolio to build private and public clouds including an enterprise-ready OpenStack for cloud infrastructure, Platform-as-a-Service with OpenShift by Red Hat, open software-defined storage with Red Hat Storage, and CloudForms for comprehensive hybrid cloud management.
