Dell acquires Enstratius

Posted by Kenneth van Surksum   |   Monday, May 6th, 2013   |

Dell today announced that it has acquired Enstratius, which used to be known as enStratus. Enstratius delivers a private and public cloud management product either available via Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) or on-premise. Dell states that the acquired technology of Enstratius will complement the technology which Dell acquired from Gale Technologies in November last year which is now called Active System Manager (ASM) offering multi-cloud management and application configuration capabilities.

Dell states: “Enstratius brings Dell cloud-infrastructure management for public, private and hybrid-cloud deployments. Enstratius also complements other Dell technologies such as Foglight performance monitoring, Quest ONE identity and access management, the Boomi integration platform, and data protection offerings such as AppAssure and NetVault to create a stronger systems management portfolio that specifically addresses cloud systems management.”

This acquisition is one of the many acquisitions Dell made in the last couple of years, like the acquisition of Quest (and also VKernel) and Wyse. All acquisitions bring products to Dell which evolve the company from a Hardware Manafucturer to a company which also is able to deliver Software services. We also see now that most products are being rebranded to the Dell trademark. What lies ahead for Dell is a huge task to integrate all the products which they own at this moment to consistent products capable of delivering end-to-end solutions. They should probably also sell or end-of-life products which do not meet their current offerings and future direction. How and if Dell is going to do that unknown at this time.
